| Did you know that the Cherokee language has its own alphabet? Ever wanted to learn more about Cherokee language, dance, food, art, or history? Urban Mozaik Magazine has discovered a small and relaxed weekly class where one can learn all of the above, right in Manhattan. Located in a community center just blocks from Lincoln Center on the Citys Upper West Side, the Cherokee Language and Cultural Circle provides small group instruction at a nominal cost. Registration is $17 per semester, plus an additional $7 per class fee. The Circle is lead by two instructors of Cherokee heritage, Red Eagle and Eagle Two Feathers, and was established to teach and pass on the language, culture, myths, dances and folkways of the Cherokee people. The weekly classes consist of three hours of language instruction (covering vocabulary, grammar and conversation) followed by two hours of cultural-based activities, ranging from leather and beadworking, to dancing and cooking. Classes are small and welcoming, and conducted with an air of communal concern and cooperation. The Circle also publishes a newsletter which includes upcoming events, recipes, essays, poetry, and current affairs. The Circle invites anyone children are also welcome who wishes to explore what it means to be Cherokee (to whatever degree) to come participate and contribute. The Cherokee Language and Cultural Circle meets at Lincoln Square, 250 West 65th Street, Room 3. Additional information about the Circle is available by calling (212) 928-5233.
