...Arthur Ashe was born in 1943 in Richmond, Virginia and realized his love for tennis and other athletics in a park which his father ran? Ashe began playing tennis at the age of seven and soon became a nationally ranked amateur by the age of 14. An honor student at Maggie Walker High School, Ashe finished school in St. Louis enabling him to pursue further tennis training under the direction of Richard Hudlin. He received a tennis scholarship from UCLA and led the school to a national championship in his final year. A victory in the 1968 U.S. Open led him to a #1 national ranking. In 1975, he became the first black man to win at Wimbledon and, as a result, the first to receive a number-one ranking internationally. After retiring from tennis, Ashe used his athletic status to further promote blacks in athletics and wrote a book about the history of black athletes. A statue on Richmond's Monument Avenue commemorates his role as an athlete and as a role model for young people.
