Great Scots!
How The Scots Created Canada

By Matthew Shaw

Published by Heartland Associates

________________

Canada, it is said, is Scotland's revenge on England. It provided an outlet for the ambition and ingenuity of Scottish émigrés, and in the process, the Scots built a nation.
________________

Matthew Shaw chronicles how penniless but enterprising Scottish émigrés came to dominate almost all forms of endeavor in early Canada and literally created much of the country we know today.

Through the fur trade, Scots formed the back bone of North America’s first continent - wide industry more than two hundred years ago. They then used their power and wealth to create the first banks, railways, shipping lines, universities, and media. They also branched into and dominated politics, the military, and literature. In short, Great Scots! demonstrates the astounding extent to which Canada’s fundamental institutions and culture are a product of early, tough-minded Scottish immigrants.

Author Matthew Shaw

Matt was born in Montana, but has lived in British Columbia for most of his life. He spent several years as a sawmill laborer and then as a financial consultant , before returning to school and graduating from the Université d'Aix - Marseille and Simon Fraser University. Later, he earned an MA from California State University. This eclectic back ground and education have led him inexorably to writing.

For the past thir teen years,Matthew and his wife have taught at an Adult Education school in Prince George, BC. Their interests include travelling, canoeing, hiking and their four- year-old son, Jon.

Matthew's writing interests are varied. His first book, To Live Deliberately, was published in 2001. His essays have appeared frequently in the national media, including in Maclean’s magazine and on CBC Radio. One of his enduring interests is the complex and seemingly indefinable nature of Canadian identity.
