Children's Books From Around The World
Kane Miller Publishing Makes A Child's World A Smaller Place

"We do not own the earth...we borrow it from our children" is the motto that one devoted publishing company uses to enhance their mission. Kane Miller Publishing is a small, passionate children's book publishing company based in La Jolla, California. It was founded, sixteen years ago by Madeline Kane and Sandy Miller, who are now both retired. What continues to make the company fullfill its goals is a small dedicated staff of three.

"We are a very small, very specialized, very independent publishing company. We chose the books we publish with extraordinary care and attention. We think about them, we discuss them, we argue about them. We read them aloud, and then we read them to ourselves, to our families, and to each other. We live with them. In the end, we publish those books that speak to us - and those that we believe will speak to children...We believe that children's books should comfort and challenge, that they should awaken the imagination and the conscience. We publish books we think are important to bring to American children. We truly believe in bringing the world closer to a child and the children of the world closer to each other. We want books that capture life's and lives experiences and present them in a way that will make children say both "wow, that's just like me" and also "wow, that's different."...We search the world for books that through great stories and arresting illustrations enrich the lives and the imaginations of the children who read them. American children need to learn not just about the United States, but about the world. They need to know that they can share adventures, and fantasies and dreams. Because the children of the coming millennium will not simply be citizen of the their own countries, they truly will be citizens of the world."

The company specializes in translated foreign children's books from countries including Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, Norway and Venezuela to name a few. A number of the titles focus on multicultural issues, although many of them do not, and are simply well-written and well-illustrated books on various subjects, previously published in their native languages. The many subjects that are covered include birthdays, cultural/global awareness, the body, self esteem, science and even one on the "potty", plus many more.

Two Kane Miller Titles

Four Princesses, a book from the Netherlands

Take four original fairy tales that take place in four very different parts of the world. Make the four very different princesses about whom each story is told beautiful, brave, resourceful, confident and powerful. Add pages of princess-related crafts specific to each story. (Fashion royal streamers and bracelets, pantaloons and slippers). Include places to put photographs (on the princesses' bodies, of course). Put it all together with a cardboard tiara that comes with stickers to decorate in a personal, princess-y style. Take all of this and then add a little girl.
The Gass We Pass - The Story of Farts, a book from Japan that doesn't require a description!
