| Strawberry
Hill Povitica (pronounced
poh-vah-teet-sah) A Traditional Croation Bread Baked Fresh in Kansas. Near
the end of the 19th century, large numbers of Croats immigrated to Kansas
City, Kansas in search of jobs in the local meat packing industry. Settling
near the Missouri River in the area known as the Strawberry Patch, they
practiced and preserved the cultural traditions and way of life they
had known in Croatia. After the Great Flood of 1903, the group moved
to higher ground, taking up residence on a nearby hill. Thus, "Strawberry
Hill" was borna thriving community enriched by its customs,
beliefs, and the proud heritage and character of its people.
